MINISTRY OF STATE,

September 29th, 1896.

Sir: -

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt

of your note of the 27th instant informing me of the

instructions which the Secretary of State for

the Colonies has had the courtesy to send to the

Governors of Hong Kong, Singapore, and other British

possessions in the Straits, with a view to preventing

as far as possible, filibustering manoeuvres and

possible hostile expeditions against the Sovereignty

of Spain in the Philippines.

This action, which is thoroughly in accordance

with the sentiments of cordial and intimate friendship

uniting the Cabinets of Madrid and London,

increases the gratitude of His Majesty's Government

which I beg you to communicate to that of Her

Britannic Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for

Foreign Affairs, through the intermediary of the

British Chargé d'Affaires.
